Open position: Professor or Associate Professor (tenure track) in Economics

Tampere University is inviting applications for the position of Professor or Associate Professor (tenure-track) in Economics.

The university hosts the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Tax Systems Research (FIT), awarded and funded by the Research Council of Finland. FIT studies the effects and design of multiple aspects of public policy. The research program is very broad, covering a multitude of topics related to public finance, labor, health, and environmental economics, and industrial organization.

We are inviting applications for the position of Professor or Associate Professor (tenure-track) in Economics. Economics at Tampere University is part of the Business Studies Unit at the Faculty of Management and Business. We provide an internationally standardized Economics program at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels.

Economics at Tampere University hosts the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Tax Systems Research (FIT), awarded and funded by the Research Council of Finland. FIT studies the effects and design of multiple aspects of public policy. Our research program is very broad, covering a multitude of topics related to public finance, labor, health, and environmental economics, and industrial organization. Our research utilizes empirical, experimental, and theoretical methods, together with world-class administrative data on individuals and firms.

Job description

We are seeking a highly motivated and accomplished academic to conduct, organize and supervise high-quality scientific research; to contribute to international collaboration and to societal impact; to give research-based teaching; to contribute to curriculum development and student supervision; as well as to the overall development of the discipline.

Professor

We require:

  • a doctoral degree in Economics
  • high-level scholarly expertise and a track record of international scholarly activity
  • experience of leading scientific research
  • ability to provide high-quality research-based education and instruction
  • a track record of winning external research funding

Associate Professor

We require:

  • a doctoral degree in Economics
  • a track record of independent and international scholarly activity
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties of the position
  • ability to lead a research group and acquire external funding

We appreciate a strong track record of innovative research with an international impact, the ability to build successful research networks and collaboration, as well as a strong commitment to high quality teaching and overall development of the economics discipline at Tampere University. Ability and drive to build and lead large research projects and consortia, as exemplified by FIT, is emphasized.

Your research may focus on any field of economics, and we appreciate both high-level empirical and theoretical expertise. A research profile that has linkages with our current research program will be considered a merit. You are expected to contribute to teaching core courses in economics at the advanced level. The post requires fluency in English.

We offer

We offer the opportunity to join a dynamic, innovative, and international research community of the discipline of Economics at Tampere University, and the first-rate research environment provided by the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Tax Systems Research. The expected start date of the position is 1 January 2027. Another starting date may be mutually agreed. If the appointment is at the full professor level, the appointment will be permanent from the outset. Initial appointment as associate professor is for five years (1.1.2027 – 31.12.2031), and subject to successful performance, the tenure track professor will become a tenured member of faculty at the end of the first five-year period. The principles of the tenure evaluation are laid out in the tenure track career system at Tampere University. Support will be provided throughout the five-year period to ease transition to a permanent faculty position. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.

Salaries are based on the job requirements and the employees’ personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. Typical starting salary of a professor will range between 6500 – 7300 EUR/month and of an associate professor between 5400 – 6000 EUR/month. Higher salaries may be agreed upon depending on experience and/or performance. Job amenities include occupational health care and flexible working hours.
